Davis - Bailey - North Pole, AK
Santa’s Baileys and Cream
Bailey was owned by a couple in Anchorage Alaska along with a Lab.
When Bailey was 5 1/2 years old, the family decided that they no longer wanted to have dogs and had their nanny take them both to the Animal Shelter.
A friend of the nanny went and got Bailey with the hopes of keeping her, but that didn’t work out. We saw her posting on Craig’s List and responded, telling her about the Alaska Rescue Group. A few days later we found out that the Rescue group was looking for someone to take her.
They had someone who was going to take her home for a trial, but unfortunately that didn’t work out for Bailey either. We found out that she had a few issues that would need to be dealt with, such as submissive urination, chronic ear infections, a bad hip and issues with small dogs. We were told that at the dog park she had pulled out of her collar and gone after a small dog. Through a lot of time, patience and, socialization we have made a lot of headway!
We told our rescue chair that we would love to take her. The only problem the chair said was that she needed picked up the next day. We live almost 400 miles away (6 hours) and the next day was Friday. I had a meeting at work but was able to leave by 1pm and Ron was off work so he and I packed the truck and headed down.
We went to the family’s home and met Bailey. She ran to us and acted as if she has always known us. We got her in our truck and found a hotel to stay at for the night—not only because of the long drive but also so we could have some 1 on 1 time with her before introducing her to the rest of the family. We brought her home and introduced her to all the dogs one by one. They all were fine, except for our little rescue dog, a Chihuahua/Maltese mix. We worked with her with treats and gave them both attention and have not had any problems with them.
We are still cautious around other dogs as she gets highly excited and jumps up and down, trying to go see them. She is definitely a handful on-leash, but we are working hard to correct that. Recently we brought home our newest Berner baby, Emma, and they are doing great together.
She has been a wonderful addition to our family. She has to be one of the most affectionate dogs we have ever seen and we love her dearly!
