Ganz - Anja - Washoe Valley, NV
In 2009 Anja was found on the streets of Reno, Nevada. No one came forward to claim her so she needed a home. We had lost Berners Ritzy and Willie earlier and more recently our first Berner, Heidi. While we still had two boys, we missed having a girl in the house. Anja joined our family.
From the past:
“With family (2 humans, two other Berners and one gray kitty) and friends, Anja has all the sweetness and charm one expects from a Berner but she also brought us some surprises. She had a scar that the vets assumed was from spay surgery. Wrong. When she came into season we were left to wonder if she may have had a Cesarian or some other unknown surgery. A routine spay solved that problem.
Next came a severe allergic reaction. This is ongoing and includes scratching and chewing herself raw as well as periodic panting and pacing. Acupuncture, NAET, and Chinese herbs have helped a lot but she still has periodic episodes.
Anja also has a strange gate and, off and on, some limping. X-rays revealed severe arthritis in both her right hip and right elbow. She also has a bone spur and spondylosis. At this point, we are treating with acupuncture, chiropractic adjustments and adequan injections as well as Chinese herbs.
Once she gets to know you, Anja is your friend for life. But, when it comes to strangers (sometimes human but mainly canine), she can be highly reactive. Another area we are working on! Would we trade our high maintenance girl for anything? Not a chance.”
In 2011 Anja developed fears of several things–an alarm system noise, thunderstorms and possibly changes in barometric pressure. These all caused lots of panting, pacing and hiding in the upstairs shower! We tried both herbal and homeopathic treatments and currently the fears seem to have subsided.
During 2012 we also added laser treatments for her orthopedic issues.
Anja has always done well with other dogs in our home or other homes as long as she isn’t on leash. This past year she also made several visits to dog beaches and dog parks where she can be off leash and she enjoyed all the dog encounters there as well. She had a good session with animal communicator, Linda Thomas, a few weeks ago and revealed some interesting things about her past, including having had one litter of 3 puppies!
Anja remains a much loved member of our family.
