Greta – Hannagan’s Off the Beaten Path
Greta’s original owners were going through a time of change. No children, both working, then the wife found herself unemployed. She had worked her whole life and with all this free time, they decided maybe it was time to get a dog. After an internet search, they purchased a puppy online and flew to Iowa, picked up Greta, and brought her back to Arizona. They were first time pet owners training an 8 week old puppy. They did very well, sought out professional help, almost had her completely house trained. But at 13 weeks, they decided she was growing too fast, she was chewing on everything, wouldn’t sleep at night, so they decided maybe a puppy was not right for them. They called the Arizona Rescue and wanted to have someone come meet her and find out what the Rescue could do.
We drove to north Phoenix to meet the owners and Greta. We played with her, asked the owners about her, why they wanted to give her up and realized the issues were that she was a puppy. We stayed quite a while, gave them information about the Rescue and what would happen to Greta if they gave her up. They decided it was best for Greta and signed her over to the Rescue.
On the way home she went from a scared, trembling little puppy to falling sound asleep. She was partially crate trained but we decided it was best to sleep close to her at night to keep her quiet. We still had to finish house training her, break her of some bad habits, like eating rocks, and teaching her some manners as she grew up. She immediately fit right in with the other dogs in our family while they thought she was the annoying little kid next door that would not leave. Within a day or so we realized she was a great little girl, so we decided to adopt her. She was smart, active, full of herself, and lots of fun.
Now 1 year later, she has completed beginner puppy class (still needs more classes, however), has started draft training, and has practiced pulling a brace cart with her older sister. She is still a puppy at heart and continues to grow and learn every day. She still has her moments but adopting Greta was a decision we will never regret.
